Your essential tech news update for November

It's that time of the month again - our latest roundup of tech news - so let's dive right in.

Hardware & Peripherals

The era of 8GB RAM is over...

With the release of the M4 range of Apple Macs, Apple has finally acknowledged that 8Gig is insufficient. The new minimum is 16Gig, and as much as this applies to Macs, it also applies to PCs. You can read more here.

ASML shipping A10 lithography machines

It appears that within a few years we will see chips made with the A10 (10 angstroms) lithography process. This means a minimum triplling in transistor density over the next few years based on density alone. You can read more here.

Add in all other developments in parallel and by 2030 we will likely see processors from all manufacturers being at least five times more powerful than anything that exists today. Based on this roadmap, companies will need to replace hardware every two years to stay current! Yikes!

Cyber Security

Black Basta Ransomware poses as IT support in Teams

Now you don't just have to be alert to attacks coming through via email, you now need to be equally vigilant over Teams. They craft a social engineering attack where they impersonate the IT HelpDesk on Teams to trick the user into installing AnyDesk or allow access to Quick Assist. You can read more about this attack here.

This shows that any tendency to trust Teams more than email is a big mistake.

Microsoft

Microsoft takes the Teams out of Teams

Microsoft is now bringing all text communication to the Teams chats section. This is quite a big change, which you can read about here.

This is also an opportunity to review your Teams usage and ensure you're getting full value from all the features you are licensed to use. Teams is a major ecosystem and it can sometimes take work to ensure you are getting full value from it for your business.

Hybrid Data Centre, Cloud & AI

CoPilot is not meeting expectations

Even through Microsoft's Q1 2025 earnings report was excellent, and AI is already Microsoft's fastest-growing business, there are concenrs that AI will not bring in the returns that justify the current spending and even more spending to come. Read more about this here.

However, Microsoft still cannot build data centres fast enough to meet demand for inferencing and training. Though adoption may lag behind expectations, deployment of AI in your environment is inevitable, and it may be good that adoption has slowed as that allows organisations to prepare.

5 security gaps that high cyber risk organisations have in common

Proofpoint's Voice of the CISO report shows how cyber criminals aren't targeting larger companies with more cash in the bank - they are instead targeting companies with known vulnerabilities and inadequate security protocols, regardless of size. Read more here.
